Lynn Davis: August 2005

It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Lynn Davis, a much loved and very important 6TS member.

Lynn DJed for us at the 100 Club and in the upstairs room at Cleethorpes on several occasions; usually appearing as “That Girl Lynn”. More importantly she was one of London’s soul scene’s most avid and passionate supporters and was a close friend to many of us.

Originally from Gloucester, she moved up to London in the early 90s and soon became involved in the soul and mod scene. A true one-off she looked, dressed and thought originally. She reminded me of the aunty in the Giles’ cartoons, who was usually seen by the side of the grumpy Gran, with a heavy cold, a bag full of medicines and her head hung down, looking at the floor. It was a while before I realised that if you spoke to her, her head would jolt back, the hair that had been obscuring her face would be swept aside, revealing a beautiful smile and a witty and enthusiastic riposte to your comments.

Her musical taste was impeccable and totally her own; she was no blind follower of musical fashion. As a promoter I knew she would spin something different but still keep the floor going throughout her set. She lost her complete DJing box a few years ago, but despite the heartache of losing her original favourites, she rebuilt an even more impressive replacement set.

She died on the afternoon of Wednesday 17th August; only 31 years old. Our thoughts go out to her mother and all her closest friends. She was an integral and unique member of the London soul family and will be badly missed by us all. Details of her funeral will be posted here when they are known.
